Safety

Wear lab gloves and eye protection.

Always follow general safety recommendations. Please note that conducting chemistry experiments you must comply with the relevant legal procedures in your country.

Reaction formula

Mg + H2O → MgO + H2

Mg + 2 H2O → Mg(OH)2 + H2

Me + 2 H2O → Me(OH)2 + H2 (Me = Ca, Sr, Ba)

Step-by-step instruction

  1. Take four test-tubes and pour water into they.
  2. Put pieces of metals into each test-tube.

Scientific background

Reactivity of metals increase from berillium to barium. Berillium doesn't react with water, magnesium extreamaly slowly reacts with water at room temperature. Calcium, strontium and barium react vigorously with water.

In thease reactions hydrogen gas and metal hydroxydes are prodused.
